Invite to this year's Ohio Band Director's Conference at The University of Akron

The Highland Concert Band and Orchestra were invited to perform at this year's Ohio Band Director's Conference, held at The University of Akron. The conference features nationally known guest conductors, performers and educators. This conference develops, recognizes and promotes excellence in concert band performances and provides young musicians and their directors with an opportunity to interact and perform.

Only one high school is chosen to perform at the conference. It is an honor and privilege to be selected out of so many fine high school bands. We know what an amazing band we have, what a talented group of young musicians they are. Our band and our students would not be what they are today without the direction and guidance of our Band Directors, Mr. Ed Marquette and Mrs. Jamie Holcomb. Thank you both for your dedication, you are greatly appreciated!

This year's guest of honor was Conductor and Composer Mr. James Curnow of Nicholasville, KY. Mr. Curnow is president and composer of Curnow Music Press, Inc., publishers of significant music for concert band and brass band. He also serves as Composer-in-Residence on the faculty of Asbury College. As a conductor and composer Mr. Curnow has been commissioned to write over two hundred works for concert band, brass bands, orchestra, choir and various vocal and instrumental ensembles.

Mr. Curnow was kind enough to visit our school, meet with our Band Directors and conduct our band while playing one of the pieces he composed. He even autographed the student's sheet music!

It was a memorable evening. Mr. Marquette and Mrs. Holcomb had our bands well prepared, they played beautifully. Congratulations to all, we're proud of you.
